Forget bright, white smiles! Apparently, the trend these days is coloring your teeth. It’s called rainbow teeth.
WHAT IS RAINBOW TEETH
There are a few different brands out there being used to color teeth. The color comes in a liquid form in small bottles similar to nail polish. You paint the liquid on your teeth and go. Some products can last up to 24 hours. One of the popular brands is called Chrom. The New York City-based creator said this trend is gaining popularity. “We see this becoming commonplace — everything from a club vibe to an everyday workplace fashion accent,” Chrom Creator David Silverstein told the New York Post. “Perhaps you go to work with one tooth [that] matches your nail polish or your hair color.” Silverstein also told The New York Post that colored teeth are popular at music festivals. He said the product is safe, and that it was created by dentists and complies with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations.
IS IT SAFE?
The companies creating this multi-colored polish say the liquid is non-toxic and not permanent. However, the polish is still staining your teeth for a temporary stretch of time, notes Dr. Jason Kboudi of Advanced Smile Care, who recommends users tread with caution.
“This is one of those beauty trends that is so new, that if you don’t understand all the contents in the bottle, I suggest it’s better that you be wary. We don’t know the long term effects of tooth polish,” he advised.
WHAT IS SAFE FOR MY TEETH?
The American Dental Association publishes an extensive list of ADA-accepted over-the-counter products which are safe to apply to your teeth. Tooth polish is not currently on this list. If you are interested in a smile that catches the eye of your friend or family, you can certainly purchase whitening products at the store. However, we want to let you know that you may experience side effects such as tooth sensitivity or inflammation of the gums that may occur after whitening.
