When Is Emergency Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Our dental team strives to save every patient’s natural tooth in as many situations as possible. However, sometimes an extraction is still necessary.

An emergency tooth extraction is most likely to be needed in the following situations:

  • Severe tooth decay that can’t be repaired with a filling or crown; This may include decay that reaches the pulp and other internal structures of the tooth
  • Advanced gum disease leading to loose teeth
  • Cracked or broken teeth from trauma, especially if the nerves or pulp are exposed; Some cases of loosened teeth due to trauma may also require emergency extraction
  • Abscesses or infections that threaten overall health
  • Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain and swelling

At Advanced Smile Care, we will do everything we can to preserve your smile. We’re dedicated to helping our patients during emergencies, providing them with same-day dental appointments and flexible scheduling to give them excellent care as quickly as possible.

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, please don’t wait to call us and let us know you’re on your way. We’ll be happy to provide you with tailored guidance over the phone.

Signs You May Need an Emergency Tooth Extraction

Finding the underlying cause of dental pain and distress can be challenging. If you were to ask the average person whether they knew what advanced gum disease looks like, they may not be able to describe it perfectly. However, we still want you to know what signs indicate you need emergency care so you can act quickly and get the correct attention.

The following are signs you need to see an emergency dental professional sooner rather than later:

  • Persistent, intense tooth pain that won’t subside
  • Swelling in the gums or face
  • Pus or drainage indicating infection
  • Pimple-like bumps, referred to as abscesses, in your oral cavity
  • Difficulty chewing, speaking, or opening your mouth
  • Fever or other systemic signs of infection
  • Bleeding that does not stop
  • Foul-smelling breath that does not go away, even after brushing

Depending on the circumstances, one or a combination of these issues may mean you need a tooth extraction as soon as possible. We encourage you to be safe rather than sorry, so please get in touch with a dental provider as quickly as possible. If your regular provider does not offer emergency care or is closed when you need support, we or other local emergency services are also available.

What to Expect During an Emergency Extraction

Typically, a tooth extraction will be performed under an anesthetic. Generally, this will be a local anesthetic, but patients can also request general anesthesia if they feel particularly anxious or prefer to be asleep during the procedure. Your provider will then use a specialized tool to grab the tooth, loosen it, and remove it from its socket. In cases where the tooth doesn’t come out or if the tooth breaks during this process, we’ll use additional tools to safely remove the remaining pieces left behind.

According to Kaiser Permanente, you may have some pain, bleeding, and swelling after the procedure. Depending on the circumstances, your provider can give you medication for the pain and discomfort. This pain should wane and eventually subside within a few days. A blood clot will also form, protecting the tooth socket during healing. However, if the blood clot gets loose or falls out of the socket, you may get a case of dry socket. To mitigate pain and damage due to bone exposure, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your provider.

You may also want to talk with your provider about replacing your lost tooth. If you have any questions, we’re happy to walk you through your options and find the solution that will work best for you. Depending on the tooth’s placement and the oral cavity’s overall health, you may be eligible for a dental implant, bridge, or denture.

I have a phobia of dentists but Dr Cavazos is amazing! I had a procedure done under oral anesthesia and didn’t feel a thing. Everyone there is super nice. I recommend Advanced Smile Care to anyone.

Best visit I’ve ever had with a dentist. From the moment I walked through the door my anxiety was gone. I’m glad I made the choice to go with Advanced Smile Care. They care about what you want and respect your choices.

I was treated very kindly. I was basically pampered. Don’t get me wrong, it was dental work but I never felt a thing. I got to watch T.V. Thank you, Dr. Hauser and your awesome staff... from the moment I walk in, to the set up, the dental work, the scheduling as I leave, thank you.

I just had my first cleaning with Wendy and saw Dr. Kboudi. Everyone from the front desk staff to the Doctor were exceptionally friendly. My husband had some dental work done here also and had a great experience, and recommended I also come in for my dental care.

Amazing staff and very clean facility. I was late and the lady called me asking if I was lost and needed direction. Once I got inside the the lady was very friendly and walked me through all the steps and then a nurse came out with a gift saying welcome to the office.

I will even shake violently while laying in the chair. It's a nightmare. However, the entire staff at ASC puts you at ease and makes you feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door. You can tell it's an important part of what they do, maybe even the most important.
