You’ve been told you need a dental crown, and now you’re wondering what’s next. Will it hurt? How long will it take? Let’s walk through what you can expect, from preparation to the final fit, so you feel confident and prepared for your next visit.

Does It Hurt to Get a Dental Crown?

While our patients get a dental crown, we take extensive precautions and measures to ensure they’re as comfortable as possible through their care. So, while we’re working on a crown, we minimize pain and try to stay as minimally invasive as possible. Some patients prefer to be sedated, though individuals with increased sensitivity or extensive anxiety may benefit from a deeper sleep during care.  In all cases, we make sure you will feel no pain and we are always in communication with you regarding your comfort level. If you are concerned, it’s essential to talk to your provider about your needs and discuss your options.

Unfortunately, healing is not a painless process. In the hours and days following your dental crown placement, you may feel sensitivity, tenderness, and pain or discomfort. The gums and surrounding tissues may also swell as blood moves into the area during healing.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Dental Crown?

How long it takes to get a dental crown will depend on the options available from your provider, as well as personal preference. For example, many dentists now have same-day crowns available, allowing their patients to get them as soon as within 90 to 120 minutes at the dentist’s office.

However, crowns fabricated in an outside dental lab take a little longer, as they’re made using a 3D scan or mold during a two to three-week period. Traditional crowns will require patients to take at least two trips to the dentist, while same-day crowns may only need one visit.

How Are Dental Crowns Prepared?

Dental crowns are either made of milled or 3D printed materials, depending on what the provider and patient choose. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, milled materials—those more likely to be used in traditional crowns—are slightly stronger and more flexible than those that are 3D printed—used in same-day crowns.

Instead of the goopy impressions needed for crowns made in a dental lab, we use advanced technology to take digital impressions. This is much more comfortable for patients and 95% more accurate for optimal-fitting crowns.

When crowns are placed, we generally use a resin composite or cement to bond them to the tooth. Not only does this ensure that the new crown stays in place and doesn’t shift, but it also creates a smoother join less likely to result in complications.

Ensuring Your Crowns Fit Correctly

Even though crowns are made from precise molds or 3D prints, dentists want to ensure that there is as perfect a fit as possible. So, when you’re getting your permanent crown put in place, your dentist may make some final adjustments and changes.

Not only will we ensure that your new crown fits properly by grinding down excess materials, but we’ll also make sure that the replacement is a proper color match for your natural teeth. We’ll only use our dental bonding composite once we know everything is exactly right.
