You’re out on a date or you are about to sit down for an important job interview, when you notice that your breath stinks. Perhaps it may relieve you to know, you’re not alone. Anyone can get bad breath! But we want you to know that your stench can be an critical indicator that you may have an underlying health issue.

Here is a quick guide to help you clean up your mouth and whether your bad breath represents a more serious problem.

What causes bad breath?

Specific foods, tobacco products, poor oral hygiene/underlying health problems

Food

If you eat sulfur-rich foods such garlic or onions, brushing your teeth isn’t going to make your breath any better any time soon. As the food is digested, the byproducts of you meal are absorbed into your bloodstream and then, travel to the lungs, which you then breathe out.

Smoking

No butts about it. The chemicals from a cigarette linger in the mouth and cause “smoker’s breath.”

Lack of dental hygiene care/underlying health problems

Live bacteria lives in your mouth. Dr. Gerald Crouch, founder of Advanced Smile Care, says bad breath occurs when people don’t properly clean the bacteria that gets collected around the teeth, gums and on the tongue. FYI: your tongue is one of the most overlooked areas when people are brushing their teeth. But halitosis can also be a sign of a more serious health issue.
“If you have any dental disease, broken fillings, especially gum disease, that can be a big factor of bad breath, because all of that bacteria is hiding around the gums and around the teeth. If it’s not ever cleaned out, then it’s just dead bacteria continuing to accumulate,” said Crouch.

How do I get rid of halitosis?

  1. Brush and floss your teeth twice a day.
  2. Invest in a good tongue scraper.
  3. Chew sugarless gum (Sugar produces the acidic byproducts which results in bad breath).
  4. Drink water. (You are susceptible to bad breath and tooth decay if you don’t produce enough saliva).
  5. Last but not least, see your dentist at least twice a year! At Advanced Smile Care, we can tell you if your bad breath is related to a medical condition and guide you from there.
